What do I need to convert a can light to a pendant light hanging over my island in my kitchen?

Is it just as simple as a can converter that you screw into the lightbulb socket? I will hanging a couple pendant lights on a decorative chain. The ceiling CANOPY or cover for the new pendant light is antique brass and 6.25 OD. Is this enough od to cover the 6″ can light hole in the ceiling?
