For starters how high is the ceiling?
We changed to a fluorescent style fixture T8, but used the linear LED version. ( http://www.ledlightingsource.com ) The fixture came from ALW Las Vegas through the lightbulb store. It really works well and with lower operating cost and no maintenance. We even got rebate money back from our electric company.

Cheapest, lowest maintenance and most light for energy consumption would be any fixture using 48" T8 or T5 fluorescent bulbs. There are dozens of types of fixture and hundreds of models. You don't give enough information for anyone to really recommend anything specific about an installation beyond that. Cheapest and tackiest lighting is 2' x 4' two or 4 lamp lay-in fluorescent ceilling fixtures that go in a dropped ceiling grid but they cause computer screen glare and create a stark look. Indirect lighting is superior for ambience and working -- you can build a linear pocket with wood around the room about 80" above the floor and install single-tube four foot T-8 fixtures inside it to reflect off the ceiling. Then use swing arm desk lamps with PL (compact fluorescent) 11 to 23 watt lamps for local desk lighting. IKEA has some nice ones for under $20 and the bulbs are easy to find anywhere.

Sir, does it look kind of like this?
http://www.rlights.com/viewproduct.php?id=19877
I'm sure it's not that exact thing, but same idea. If so, you've got a tiffany pendant. They're really pretty. As for posting pictures, you have to post them on another site and link to them from here. I hope that helps!
